Tips for cleansing
This page provides a brief overview of the DO's and DO NOTS of juice cleansing.
The Fix team knows how hard it can be to get the recommended daily dose of veggies. We understand that the prospect of cleansing can be a little scary as there are many temptations that cross your path every day.
The Fix cleanse will gently rid your body of impurities, enable you to regain balance and normalise digestion and metabolism. This program triggers cleansing through your eliminatory organs, the liver, kidneys and skin.
By the time you finish our cleanse, you will feel a difference in your energy levels, quality of sleep and general well being. Our nutrient dense juices allow the body to have more of the resources it needs to support proper function and effective detoxification. The benefits of cold pressed juice stem from their nutritional profile.
We believe that the benefits of cleansing go beyond giving your body a rest.
Benefits to the mind:
- The mood balancing properties we have included will naturally improve energy levels, promote calm and reduce stress.
- Cleansing coincides with ridding the mind of harmful, unnecessary thoughts
- The mind is cleansed from poor habits and addictions
- As you relax your food schedule, you may realise how little is needed in terms of food, stimulation and distractions to feel well and content
- Your self-confidence may grow with the exercise of will
Benefits to the body
- Liver - Without the constant supply of chemicals to process, the liver can better utilise the array of phytonutrients provided by the 1kg of fruit and veg pressed into your juice. This means that your liver is working optimally to remove toxins from the body.
- Small intestines- are given the opportunity to heal with no solids moving through them.
- The nervous system is less stimulated and the density of trace minerals found in the juice means that people find they generally sleep better and wake up feeling more refreshed.
- Colon - needs sufficient hydration and soluable fibre and pre and pro biotics in order to continue functioning optimally. If you do not have these, then you have blockages and bloating. The juice helps keep everything move and restores the natural ecology in the colon.
- The lymphatic system- filters and transports toxins between your liver organs and skin while supporting your immune system. The juice helps improve the lymphatic flow.
As a result of the above, many people report the following:
- Increased energy
- Balanced body weight
- Reduced digestive symptoms
- Strengthened immunity
- Enhanced mental clarity, focus and concentration
- A balanced, mindful approach to food
- Clear, glowing skin
Use a castor oil pack over your liver zone to aid healing and promote cleansing.
Every morning scrape off residue that will be produced as your body detoxes.
Get a message to aid in flushing toxins from the body. It will help reduce stress, too.
Try dry skin brushing to stimulate your lymphatic system and remove dead skin
Take an Epsom salt bath to flush the system, and pull uric acid out of the kidneys.
possible side effects
At Day 3 of your cleanse you may experience sluggish bowel function. The alkalinity of the juices combined with abstaining from solids allow old waste matter to be loosened up than your bowels are able to eliminate naturally. The bowels can become overwhelmed and stop. A colonic will help get things moving again.
These are usually owing to caffeine or sugar cravings. It is important to do the two days preparation to avoid them. If you do develop a headache, be sure to drink water.
Dizziness or nausea
This is very rare (about 1 in 1000 people) and may be related to a lack of sodium. First step is to drink coconut water, and if that doesn't help, add a pinch of sea salt to one of your juices.
This is quite normal. Your body is adjusting to consuming less solid foods. Drinking warm lemon water in the mornings helps and if it persists there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating a carrot or celery stick.
May change (usually for the worse) particularly in heavy meat eaters. Try adding psyllium husk (available in any health food shop) to your lemon water or tea.
Sometimes even good things take a little adjusting to. Consult your doctor if any of these symptoms persist or begin to interfere with your daily routine. Cleansing should not be a test of your endurance or will power. It should not be an uncomfortable experience. Remember, you can always go the full distance next time.
To get optimum results and all of the benefits of the cleanse, we recommend abstaining from these consumables for two days before you start drinking our healthful juices.
- Dairy Products
- Meat & Poultry
- Refined Sugar
- Refined Starches
Removing these items from your diet before the cleanse, will enable your body to begin the detoxification process but will also help reduce sugar and caffeine cravings during the cleanse.
We also suggest that you increase the amount of liquids in your diet. More filtered water, more coconut water and more tea. Every morning, drink lukewarm filtered water with some fresh squeezed lemon. This has a hydrating and alkalizing effect on the body.
during the cleanse
We suggest drinking each juice about two hours apart. Begin with the first juice when you wake up, and end with the last drink one hour before you go to bed.
You can also drink water, tea or coconut water during your cleanse. This helps keep you hydrated as well as assisting in the elimination of toxins.
You may find that you will need to run to the toilet fairly often. This is completely normal. It just means that your body is working to detox. The juice will get the digestive system moving so expect tummy rumbles every now and then.
You might feel the opposite and not be able to go to the toilet. This is also OK, consider drinking water in between your juices.
We suggest that you aim for 6-8 hours of sleep. During sleep your body will continue to eliminate toxins while healing and regenerating itself.
Your skin is your largest organ, and provides an efficient exit route for waste, so exfoliation is key. Dry skin brushing before a shower or before exercising will open up pores. People who exercise and sweat often have the best results from the cleanse.
Just remember to listen to your internal rhythm. If you are sleepy, take a 10 minute nap, if you feel energised go for a walk, if you are grumpy pick up a beet juice and if you feel like treating yourself, add a banana to your milk and blend it.
If you are feeling satisfied but you are missing the act of eating, then a carrot or celery stick will help. A handful of almonds will also do the trick.
Finally we suggest that you use this time to reflect on the foods you are replacing with the juices.
after the cleanse
Easing out of your cleanse is just as important as the cleanse itself. This means small portions and meals consisting primarily of raw fruits and vegetables as well as soups and salads in the two days following your cleanse. Smoothies and juices are great choices as well.
Include healthy fats into your diet. Foods like almonds, cashews, coconuts, avocados and seeds actually help break sugar addiction and reduce high cholesterol.
Avoid processed and refined foods. The closer to nature you get the greater service you are doing your body. Artificial additives and preservatives add an immense amount of stress on your capacity to digest food. They also adversely affect your immune system.
Finally, eat mindfully. We definitely understand that making a permanent change is difficult, so we suggest starting slow. One step at a time, start with replacing dairy milk with oat milk, almond milk or rice milk and see how you go!
